Understanding Interstitial Cystitis (IC)

Interstitial cystitis also known as painful bladder syndrome is a chronic condition defined as “Pain or pressure perceived to be related to the urinary bladder, associated with lower urinary tract symptoms of more than six weeks duration, in the absence of infection or other identifiable causes.”

Symptoms of IC are characterized by:

  • Pain in the low back
  • Pain below the belly button and between inner thighs
  • Urinary frequency and urgency
  • Constipation
  • Pain during intercourse

Recently, The American Urological Association (AUA) deemed pelvic floor physical therapy to be the most effective treatment for IC with trials showing 85% of patients benefiting from it. Pelvic floor physical therapy aims at releasing the muscles of the pelvic floor in order to take pressure off of the nerves that can cause radiating pain through areas including the pelvis, bladder, and urethra. This would result in removal of irritation and restoring of normal function.

A multidirectional approach is recommended in the treatment of IC alongside Physical Therapy. These approaches include stress relief, diet and nutrition, acupuncture and supplements, bladder treatments and oral medication.
