There are 3 places in your body that hold most of our stress – the shoulders, ribs and pelvic floor. Your pelvic floor muscles are a group of supports that support your pelvic organs such as your bladder, uterus and rectum. They act like a hammock providing structural support to these organs helping control bowel and bladder functions. Like many other muscle groups, the pelvic floor muscles can become tense due to factors such as stress, poor posture, childbirth. Restricted pelvic floor muscles can contribute to urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction and organ prolapse.
Here are some tips to help you relax your pelvic floor –
- Child’s pose
- Happy baby pose
- Breathing into a deep squat
- Pelvic wand training (only use after formal training from pelvic PT)
- Release the tension in your neck (tension in the neck and TMJ is linked to the pelvic floor)
Although these tips may help provide some relaxation to the pelvic floor musculature, it is also important to know the source of your tension and what may be causing the restriction – this way we can treat the source and not just cover up the symptoms.
