The Role of Relaxin

During pregnancy and postpartum, a hormone called relaxin plays a crucial role in preparing the body for childbirth and supporting recovery afterwards. Produced by the ovaries, relaxin helps to relax muscles, ligaments and joints to allow for the necessary adaptations of the body as well as to accommodate the growing baby and facilitate labor and delivery. While it serves important physiological functions, its effects on the body can vary and may contribute to body benefits and challenges during pregnancy and postpartum.

Pelvic relaxation – in order to accommodate the growing baby, relaxin helps the ligaments and joints of the pelvis to become more mobile

 Breastfeeding – relaxin may also play a role in breastfeeding by promoting the relaxation of the mammary glands and facilitating milk production and letdown
