Children can suffer from constipation due to various reasons. Adequate water and fiber intake play a large role in managing constipation, however, your child may have constipation due to reasons other than this as well! It is not uncommon for children to delay the urge to defecate due to a history of painful bowel movements or simply because they do not want to miss out on an activity. Over time if this pattern continues, your child may have a decreased urge making it difficult to recognize when they may need to empty their bowels. Your physical therapist can help establish a bowel routine as well as make recommendations regarding fiber and water intake to help promote more regular bowel movements.
