As a parent, you want to welcome your baby into the world healthy and safe. And if that means by C-section, the resulting incision represents a miracle of life – your beautiful baby. Of course, now managing your incision is a priority because the formation of scars and adhesions can cause pain and limitations in function. Physical therapy post C-section involves manual therapy, scar tissue mobilization, myofascial release, and core, abdominal, and pelvic floor strengthening. Gentle mobilization can be done 4 weeks post delivery but then further scar tissue management 6-8 weeks post delivery. Scar tissue mobilization helps reorganize your scar tissue into a similar pattern of normal tissue by reducing adhesions. This promotes elasticity and improves the body’s fascia which lessens pain and discomfort and allows for better strengthening. Your therapist will teach you had to manage your scar and sometimes certain techniques such as dry needling and cupping will be effective.
