Constipation is a common issue in children that can cause discomfort and worry for both kids and parents. While it may not often start as something serious, it’s important to recognize the signs and know how to manage it effectively. Constipation in children is typically defined as having fewer than three bowel movements per week, straining for greater than 25% of the time, or passing hard or lumpy stools.
Understanding the underlying causes can help in managing and preventing constipation. Common causes and risk factors may include:
- Diaper rash
- Low dietary fiber
- Anal fissures
- Rigid toilet training
- Emotional distress
- Physical and psychological trauma
- Painful past bowel movements
- Prematurity
- Genetic predisposition
Because there are no internal assessments done with pediatric patients, we need to consider other methods of examining their pelvic floor. When evaluating a child who is experiencing constipation, we look at their postural functioning by means of assessing their pelvic floor, their motor control development by means of assessing their bowel and bladder as well as their gross motor milestones.
If your child is constipated, try having them blow bubbles or on a pinwheel while passing a bowel movement in order to help them relax their pelvic floor. A distracting activity or a reward system may help them sit for longer on the toilet without simultaneously pushing and create more interest for your child by giving them a goal to achieve.
